The TLK2201BRCPRG4 is a physical layer device (PHY) used by most Ethernet applications. It facilitates the function of connecting and timing Ethernet network signals. This unique device is a low-power Ethernet transceiver that is used to extend the reach of systemic and layer 1 communications.
The TLK2201BRCPRG4 is an integrated 10/100 Mbps Ethernet physical layer device with an internal 10/100BASE-TX transceiver and signal-receiving circuits. The TLK2201BRCPRG4 is part of the MicroChip’s ChipKITTM Maximum Performance family of parts and utilizes the Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) technology. This transceiver includes advance frame recognition, time segmenting, collision resolution and advanced filtering functions. The advanced frame recognition allows the transmit frames to be classified by the type of packet- Ethernet, Frame Relay and ATM. With segmenting, the device allows a port to control the overall Ethernet traffic with priority modeling. In addition, the protocol supports priority encoded frames and allows the priority sector to be specified.
The TLK2201BRCPRG4 supports full and half duplex operation, HDLC mode and Gigabit Ethernet speeds up to 1000base-T. With support for Autonegotiation, the device enables detection of transmitters, allow the device to automatically select the optimal parameters for the connection.
The TLK2201BRCPRG4 device’s low-power consumption is enabled by the Active Power Reduction Mode (APRM). Functionality of the Low-Power Conditioner Circuit (LPCC) provides APRM. The LPCC can selectively disable specific subsets of the digital front-end, as well as selectable combinations of the PHY’s clock, receiver, and transmitter. When used in accordance with the power reduction specification, the LPCC enables the TLK2201BRCPRG4 to operate hundreds of times above the standard physical layer power consumption.
The receiver section of the TLK2201BRCPRG4 utilizes a novel architecture that provides robust immunity to common-mode noise and cross-talk. Automatically evaluates incoming signals as either valid packet information or crosstalk while minimizing interference between transmitters and receivers. This prevents false triggers and mistake packets. The tight control on the maximum delay of each parallel data channel simplifies timing requirements.
The TLK2201BRCPRG4 provides several additional features. The included type of packet filter can be used to mask out specific Ethernet frame types, broadcast and multicast frames. An extended receive buffer enables the timestamps for all packet data to be recorded by payload size. Furthermore, programmable data formatting provides support for various data formats. Lastly, the integrated LED control allows for LED functionality to be programmable, enabling LED indications of link status and activity.
