The TLP2160 has two distinct classes of technology: the Type P (TP) and the Type F (TF). The TF family is a photo-Thyristor output optoisolator, where a combination of two isolation barriers and a thyristor-type switch are used to make a single output transistor drive a higher current load.

The TLP2160 has two pins; one is the input side while the other is the output side. On the input side, there is a light source, like an LED, which is turned on when the voltage applied is above a certain threshold. When the voltage is below the threshold, the LED is turned off. The output side of the TLP2160 device comprises a PIN photo-conductive device with an inverted output configuration. When the LED is turned on, the output side PIN photodiode sends an AC signal which sets the logic state of the output. When the LED is turned off, the output side PIN photodiode sends a DC signal which resets the logic state of the output.
