The TLP2704E is a small-sized highly efficient opto-isolator IC primarily designed for use in the digital logic output field. The most common application for using a TLP2704E is to provide protection to digital logic output from excess electrical discharge, thus preventing system malfunction.
The TLP2704E consists of a gallium arsenide infrared-emitting diode, optical separator, and a silicon NPN photo-transistor. When the diode is forward biased, it emits a beam of infrared radiation that is intercepted by the phototransistor’s base-collector junction. If the intensity of the light sufficiently exceeds the transistor’s breakdown voltage (VB), the current through the transistor increases, and the voltage at the collector decreases.
The circuit of the TLP2704E is designed specifically to output digital logic signals from the collector of the phototransistor. This is achieved by providing a reference voltage to the cathode of the LED. When the input voltage to the phototransistor (VI) exceeds VB, the current through the LED increases, and the voltage at the LED’s anode decreases, thus decreasing the amount of radiation emitted from the LED.
