It has a wide variety of applications including system reset circuits, motor/solenoid controllers, memory protectors, lamp drivers, and signal transfer isolators.The main purpose of the TLP291(E) is the electrical isolation between its input and output. It works by coupling a signal from its control circuit to the LED side, which, when energized, triggers a response from the photodetector side. The signal is held in the phototransistor until the LED is no longer energized, resulting in a complete electrical isolation between the two circuits.The LED and photodetector are optically coupled within a single housing, made with optically transparent material to ensure the signal is transferred correctly. The photodetector is a phototransistor, which responds to incident light from the LED with an output current. The current generated from the phototransistor is amplified, providing a substantial output current.The optocoupler housing contains two elements, LED and photodetector, with respective pins used for connection. Anode of the LED is connected to the pins intended for positive voltage (VCC), while its cathode is connected to the pins intended for input signal (IN). The collector of the photodetector is connected to the pins intended for the output signal (OUT), while it\'s emitter is connected to the pins intended for the ground (G ND).The output current of the TLP291(E) is programmed by connecting a resistor between the input side of the device and the ground. The value of this resistor determines the current flowing through the LED and consequently the sensitivity of the photodetector.The output current of the optocoupler is linear with respect to the input current, and it does not exceed a certain threshold. Thus, the electrical isolation can be achieved in two stages; 1) the low-current stage, where the voltage maintained at the output is low enough to provide a level of security against electrical hazards; and 2) the high-current stage, where sufficient output current can be provided to enable transfer of a desired signal or voltage.The TLP291(E) is a reliable and durable optoisolator solution for design engineers looking for electrical isolation in their circuits.
