Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic OutputOptoisolators, or optocouplers, are electronic components that electrically isolate two circuits while using light as the communication medium between the two circuits. This isolation makes optoisolators an important part of power electronic systems and low-voltage, low-power applications. The TLP293-4 is one of the most popular optoisolators on the market. It is a photovoltaic output, transistor output optoisolator ideal for controlling small DC loads, such as switching relays and motors. The TLP293-4 optoisolator is a hermetically sealed, compact and low-cost device that offers isolation, high speed switching, and low power consumption. It has an open-collector phototransistor output switch, an infrared-emitting diode (IRED) input, and an LED indicator for output state detection. The optoisolator was designed to provide 4000 volts of permanent isolation and can be used in a broad range of systems, from industrial motor control systems to data communications systems. The TLP293-4 operates on a bipolar input signal. The IRED input side requires a logarithmic signal between 3.2 and 7.8 volts to activate the output switch. The logic threshold is at 5 volt which is represented by a turn-on/turn-off frequency of 5 kHz. The output switch is rated at 20 mA and can operate up to 40 mA. The optoisolator can be connected in common-emitter (CE) or common-collector (CC) mode depending on the application.The internal construction of the optoisolator consists of the LED, infrared photodiode, photoresistor, phototransistor, and bias resistor. The LED emits light when it is biased above a certain threshold voltage. The photodiode is opposite of LED and is sensitive to the emitted LED light. It then generates a voltage effective the photodiode\'s reverse bias, which then controls the base current of the phototransistor. The bias resistor is used to generate correct amount of current through the photodiode when the LED is on, and to turn it off when the LED is off. The TLP293-4 optoisolator is used in power electronic systems, including in robotics, automotive and industrial control, telecommunications, and medical electronics. It provides a low-cost and reliable way to control small DC loads without the risk of arcing or sparking that can occur from direct contact between the two circuits.
