Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic OutputOptoisolators, also called optocouplers, are solid state devices that use Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) or other optical elements to transfer electrical signals without direct electrical contact. Optoisolators divide electrical circuits into two parts and transfer signals between them, which prevent high voltage from damages caused by electric shock, and protect equipment from disruptive external electric or electromagnetic interference. The most commonly used type of optoisolator is the Transistor, Photovoltaic Output type, such as TLP631(GB,F), which is widely used in signal transmitting and limiting applications.TLP631(GB,F)TLP631(GB,F) is a two channel type optical Coupler with 1 Form A (SPST) output type. It has two separated input circuits, a photovoltaic output circuit, and a series resistor in each output circuit. The output impedance of TLP631(GB,F) is very low, making it excellent for driving loads. TLP631(GB,F) has a response time of 100µs maximum for photovoltaic output. The additional series resistors provide extra protection against output short circuits. The package is a 4-pin plastic dip package with a bottom viewable input window and safety shutter.Application FieldTLP631(GB,F) is widely used in a broad range of applications, such as measuring and instrumentation, automation, industrial control, communications, computer peripherals, and consumer electronics. It has several applications in these fields, such as industrial control circuitry, motor control, signal switching, signal monitoring, data communications, telephones, modems, robotics, and automotive controls. It is commonly used in situations where noise immunity, electrical isolation, and protection from transient pulses are needed.Working PrincipleTLP631(GB,F) works by using an LED to transfer electrical signals. Light energy from the LED is converted into a current flow in the photovoltaic output circuit when illumination reaches the photodiode. The intensity of the current is proportional to the intensity of the LED light. In the output circuit, each side has a 5.1V zener diode, while the output driver transistor has a fire threshold of 5.9V. Once the voltage at the diode reach these levels, the transistor is turned on, and the output relay is activated. The light output intensity is constant, while the output current is proportional to the intensity of the input current.
