1. Describe

The TLV3502AID family of push-pull output comparators feature a fast 4.5ns propagation delay and a 2.7V to 5.5V operating voltage. The off-rail input common-mode range makes it ideal for low-voltage applications. Rail-to-rail outputs drive CMOS or TTL logic directly. Tiny packages offer options for portable and space-constrained applications. A single (TLV3501) is available in 6-lead SOT-23 and 8-lead SO packages. Dual (TLV3502) is available in 8-pin SOT-23 and 8-pin SO packages.

6. Function description

    1. Operating Voltage

        The TLV3502AID comparators are specified for a single 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply (or ±1.35 V to ±2.75 V dual supply) over the -40°C to +125°C temperature range. These devices continue to work below this range, but performance is not specified.

    2. Input overvoltage protection

        The device inputs are protected by electrostatic discharge (ESD) diodes that conduct if the input voltage exceeds the supply by approximately 300 mV. If the input current is limited to 10 mA, transient voltages in excess of 300 mV from the supply can be tolerated. This limitation is easily achieved with a small input resistor in series with the comparator.

7. Application Information

When used with a good layout, the TLV3502AID has strong performance. However, the comparator inputs have little noise immunity within the specified offset voltage range (±5 mV). For slow moving or noisy input signals, the comparator output can cause undesired switching states when the input signal crosses the switching threshold. In such applications, the 6 mV internal hysteresis of the TLV3502AID may not be enough. To improve noise immunity, external hysteresis can be added by connecting a small amount of feedback to the positive input. Typical topology used to introduce 25mV of additional hysteresis for a total of 31mV of hysteresis when operating from a single 5V supply. Calculate the approximate total lag using Equation 1. The total hysteresis, VHYST, sets the value of the transition voltage required to switch the comparator output, by enlarging the threshold region, thereby reducing sensitivity to noise.
