TLV70215DBVT Application Field and Working Principle

PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) voltage regulators use linear control to manage the output voltage of a power supply, also known as DC-DC regulator. The TLV70215DBVT voltage regulator is even more precise and is designed to offer ultra low-noise performance for driving RF applications. Working Principle

The TLV70215DBVT is a low-noise regulator that works with a linear control architecture. The converter includes a P-channel MOSFET (PMOS) pass transistor, and a replenishment transistor that operates as a controlled current source. It also includes an error amplifier and reference voltage to set the output voltage.

The TLV70215DBVT uses an internal reference voltage to set the standard output voltage of the regulator. The external voltage applied to the Adjust pin is multiplied by a factor to match the output voltage. The Error Amplifier (EA) compares the output voltage to the reference voltage and produces an error voltage (Verr). The Verr then passes through the filter and the compensation network before being applied to the gate of the PMOS.

The error voltage then adjusts the P-channel MOSFET’s gate voltage and thus its conductance, regulating the output voltage. During operation, the replenishment transistor continuously supplies current to the output to replenish the current lost due to the PMOS’s drain-source ON resistance and the IC’s output sink current.

The TLV70215DBVT converter has a low-noise performance at the expense of a relatively low output current limit of 20mA. It is capable of handling output voltage range of 0.8V to 15V with a high degree of accuracy. The output voltage accuracy is ±2% for VOUT lesser than 10V and ±5% for VOUT between 10V and 15V. It can handle transient events in excess of +/-100mA when the output voltage is gated high.
