The TMC429-I is an advanced motor and motion control system belonging to the category of PMIC (Power Management ICs) – namely Motor Drivers, Controllers – developed and produced by Trinamic GmbH. The device was intended as a highly specialized motion control unit, combining motion and position control logic dedicated to driving Brushless DC, stepper and DC brush motors with advanced possibilities of encoder input and the bus protocol interface SCLP.

It provides maximum integration levels allowing a significantly simplified system design. Its main features include a maximum support of 8 simultaneously stepping motors, controlling up to 8 axes and configuring up to 16 segments of motion, allowing easy implementation of highly sophisticated motion sequences and motion profiling. With a maximal current of 2A per phase and a voltage range of 5-24V, the device operates in ambient temperatures from -40°C to +125°C.

On the application side, the TMC429-I iss widely used for a variety of applications in industry and commercial settings, mostly for motors with encoders in the fields of robotics, CNC stands for computer numerical control machine tools, positioning, measuring, printing and packaging. Its high speed data motion applications, such as pointing and scanning, online testing systems, medical diagnostic, production and machining, civil engineering, and electronic equipment such as automated factory machines, driving control, and satellite engine systems have also been proven highly successful for over two decades.

The TMC429-I’s architecture comprises of two main components – input interface and control logic – that work together to provide maximum flexibility. The input interface, from the upper section of the device, is organized in 1 of 6 data buses, depending on the application requirements, which then perform operations on 8-16 digital input pins using 4-8 output channels.

The lower section consists of the active control logic itself. It has two control modes - Position mode and Speed mode. In the Position Mode, the motor is driven with the desired velocity to a certain position allowing step pulses to be obtained and hence, the desired position can be achieved. On the other hand, Speed Mode enables velocity and acceleration along the movement. The device includes a host and one or more slaves, wherein the host interacts with the slaves via I2C protocol, thereby making the communication between the slaves efficient by executing commands.

The TMC429-I is the ideal solution for high-performance motion control applications when a discrete microcontroller is inadequate and it offers significant advantages that make it possible to integrate motion control functions into existing industrial designs with short time-to-market cycles. It also provides an easy way to design and implement closed-loop control systems using stepper motors and/or encoders, plus it also features a rich set of features like velocity-position command mode input interface, absolute value reference input, maximum current setting and a comprehensive monitoring system.
