1. Describe

The TMP116 family consists of low-power, high-accuracy temperature sensors with integrated EEPROM memory. The TMP116 provides 16-bit temperature results with 0.0078°C resolution and ±0.2°C accuracy without calibration. The TMP116AIDRVT is compatible with the I2Cand SMBus interface, has programmable alarm functions, and supports up to four devices on a single bus. The TMP116AIDRVT consumes the least amount of current, which in addition to saving power, minimizes self-heating and improves measurement accuracy. The TMP116 operates from 1.9 V to 5.5 V and typically consumes 3.5 µA. Over the device operating temperature range of –55°C to +125°C, the TMP116 exceeds the accuracy of a Class A RTD while consuming less than one-fifth the excitation current typical of a PT100 RTD. The TMP116 is easier to use than RTDs and does not require calibration, external circuitry, matching traces and Kelvin connections. The TMP116 unit is 100% tested on a NIST traceable production setup and validated using equipment calibrated to ISO/IEC 17025 recognized standards.

6. Function Description

    1. Charge

        After the supply voltage reaches the operating range, the device requires 1.5 ms to power up before a conversion can begin. The device can also be programmed to start in shutdown mode; the temperature register stores –256°C before the end of the first conversion.

    2. Temperature Results and Limits

        At the end of each conversion or averaging period, the device updates the temperature register with the conversion result. The data read in the result register is in twos complement format with a data width of 16 bits and a resolution of 7.8125 m°C. The TMP116AIDRVT also has alert status flags and alert pin functions that use the temperature limits stored in the lower and upper limit registers. The alarm register uses the same data format as the temperature register.

7. Application Information

The TMP116AIDRVT is used to measure the temperature of the board location where the device is mounted. this Programmable address options allow monitoring of four locations on the board on a single serial bus.
