How does it work? In simple terms, it uses a reverse conducting diode to suppress transient voltage events as they occur. Under normal operating conditions, these diodes provide a low forward voltage drop. When lightning surges or other abrupt transient voltage events occur, the diodes become reverse conducting and divert the transient current away from the protected circuits.

In order to help dissipate the resulting energy, the diodes feature a dielectric medium which dissipates the energy over each transient event. This dissipated energy helps to reduce the peak voltage of the transient event before it reaches the protected circuit, ensuring the circuit is properly protected.

In cases where the transient voltage event is especially severe, the diode may be destroyed, but this ensures that the protected circuit is intact, as the diode becomes an electricity highway to the ground, thus protecting the electronic circuitry it is meant to protect.
