The Transient Voltage Suppressive diode, commonly known as TVS diode, is a type of semiconductor that is used to protect the exposed electronics from overvoltages that can occur due to ESD, lightning, or power surges.

The TVS diode consists of a p-n junction constructed with a heavily doped region of silicon that is designed to clamp transient voltages. It acts like a voltage-sensitive switch by quickly diverting hazardous voltages away from delicate electronics. When a voltage spike passes through the diode, it will begin to conduct and then quickly clamp the voltage.

TPC11HM3/86A Application Field and Working Principle

The TPC11HM3/86A is a uni-directional TVS diode designed to protect sensitive electronic components from hazardous voltage transients caused by ESD, lightning and other overvoltage events. It is designed to be used in automotive, consumer, industrial, medical and other consumer electronics applications.

The TPC11HM3/86A features an internal diode structure designed to clamp transients to +150V. The diode is rated up to 11A peak impulse current (system will be limited by energy capability of the package). The package size of 3 mm x 1.2 mm makes it suitable for space-constraint applications.

When in operation, the TPC11HM3/86A quickly diverts or clamps a transient voltage away from the electronics that it is protecting. It is designed to be used in conjunction with other components, such as varistors or diodes, to provide additional protection against overvoltage events.
