The TPN3021 is a four-leg thyristor assembly that is designed for use in water heater control, pumping and motor control, and pulse applications. The TPN3021 is a type of Thyristor, also known as a Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR). It is made of 4 layers of semiconductor material, with the two inner layers containing alternating N and P type materials. A thyristor behaves like a switch – when forward biased, it will allow current to flow, and when reversed biased, it will block current. This behaviour makes it particularly useful for controlling the flow of electrical current.
In the TPN3021, the 4 terminals are designated as ‘Anode’, ‘Cathode’, ‘Gate’ and ‘Control’. The ‘Anode’ and ‘Cathode’ are the two outer terminal, ‘Gate’ is the middle one and ‘Control’ is the inner terminal.
The working principle of the TPN3021 is based on the principle of the thyristor. The anode and cathode of the thyristor are both connected to DC power supply voltage. When the gate current reaches the threshold voltage, the thyristor enters a “firing state”, meaning that it will start to conduct electric current through the junction. This current will flow until the current reaches below a pre-set value, or until the power supply voltage is removed from the circuit. The control terminal is used to control the firing of the thyristor, either manually or by using a control signal.
