The TPS2101D is a synchronous rectifying MOSFET (SRM), Generally referred to as synchronous rectifying MOSFET controller. This device is especially well suited for processing systems and other applications which require very low power levels from a broad range of input power levels. The TPS2101D is designed to provide robust synchronous rectification with superior performance and superior noise immunity with reduced regulation complexity.

The TPS2101D is used in PMIC-OR controllers, ideal diodes, and power over Ethernet applications. In PMIC-OR controllers, due to the synchronous rectification, the power stage efficiency can be increased as compared with traditional diodes. The synchronous rectification also reduces the conduction loss and improves the power factor.

In ideal diode applications, the use of the TPS2101D solves the problem of a diode in terms of efficiency, thermal stress, and time constant, and replaces a conventional diode with a low forward voltage drop, active current limitation, and fast turn-on. Its use significantly reduces the cost of applications. Also, ideal diodes based on the TPS2101D eliminate the need for a Heat Sink. In Power over Ethernet applications, the TPS2101D improves the performance of the system by providing a fast and efficient current regulation.

The TPS2101D works on the principle of synchronous rectification which consists of two switches working with two distinct control signals. The two control signals control a pair of switches. The control signals are multiplexed in time; one switch is enabled in each time period. When the switch is on, the current flows from the VIN to the GND terminal, converting the kinetic energy of the current into a static energy stored in the electric circuit.

The TPS2101D performs an important role in reducing the electric power consumption by reducing losses in the form of Joule heating. This is done by switching the current from alternate sources to provide efficient conversion of the electric energy. Moreover, it helps in maximizing the efficiency by using maximum current during the on phrases and minimum current during the off phases.

The other features of the device include integrated fault protection, internal programmable ZVR (1V) source, and ability to switch on and off with a wide range of input voltage. Furthermore, it features an optional 5V clamp circuitry which provides additional protection during low input voltage conditions. This device is available in an 8 pin surface mount layout, making it easy to integrate into most circuit boards.
