TPS2231PWPG4 is an integrated power distribution switch, load driver, and transient suppressor from Texas Instruments. It was designed to offer an optimized solution for several industrial and commercial applications, such as small and medium size digital systems, LED backlight drivers, industrial motor drives, offline digital power tools and smart phones.

Based in a single monolithic substrate, the TPS2231PWPG4 contains an N-channel integrated power MOSFET, an output driver for an external MOSFET or IGBT/BJT transistor, as well as an input switch for a PWM control signal. It has an undervoltage lockout feature with a voltage between 13 and 28 VDC, and wide adjustable overcurrent protection range. The device also offers over-temperature protection, cycle by cycle current limit and output short-circuit protection.

On the other hand, the TPS2231PWPG4 is made to provide an efficient system design as it dissipation of only 1.2 W on 8 VDD while driving 500 mA at 20 V. Moreover, the device has a totally integrated protection features including anti-parallel relay and low capacitance MOSFET arrangements. The device also has adjustable thermal shutdown hysteresis, scalable fault reporting, and adjustable LED current limiting.

The working principle of a TPS2231PWPG4 includes a N-channel MOSFET for low side switching, an input driver for PWM control signal, output driver for an external MOSFET, and a PNP current limit for overcurrent protection. This device has a MOSFET gate drive voltage of 0.9 V and a typical rise time of 45 ns.

The MOSFET operates in saturation region while the device is switched on and it is linear while the device is off. The input driver has the ability to control the gate of MOSFT with a PWM signal with a typical delay of 30 nanoseconds. The output driver consists of an NPN current limit that limits the drive current of external MOSFET, while the PNP current limit monitors the output voltage and current of the external MOSFET.

Overall, the TPS2231PWPG4 is made to provide high efficiency, wide range of protection features, and require low EMI design for switch mode power supplies and low standby power solutions.
