PMIC — Power Over Ethernet (PoE) Controllers are used for powering powered devices (PDs) and other network equipment that are connected by the Ethernet network, such as routers and switches. The TPS2372-3RGWT is a PoE Controller developed by Texas Instruments that is used to manage power to connected PDs in the Ethernet network. In this article, the application field and working principle of TPS2372-3RGWT are explored.
The TPS2372-3RGWT is used in IEEE 802.3 af, at, Type 3 and bt PoE applications, and is used to regulate power drawn from the switch or voltage source while providing a maximum power output of up to 87W in Type 3 Mode. It is designed to control the PoE supply by monitoring the PDs current and voltage while protecting sensitive components from any overcurrent/voltage conditions. The device is configurable to either sink or source Type 2 Mode power, with 25W being the absolute maximum in this mode. Furthermore, the device contains a PoE Interface, a Power Monitor, a Voltage Regulator and a Controller Unit.
The PoE Interface of the TPS2372-3RGWT is responsible for monitoring the PDs current and voltage. In particular, 12V of PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment) voltage is monitored alongside the current level of the powered device, allowing the device to regulate the power drawn from the switch. This portion of the device also features a low-leakage, fast N-channel MOSFET with a current limit setting that is programmable via the Control Signals (CS1, CS2 and CS3).
The controller is the unit responsible for controlling the device. It contains input pins for enabling/disabling of power and for sensing the disconnected state of the powered device. It also contains output enable (OE) pins to output the enable/disable status of the TPS2372-3RGWT. The controller is also equipped with four dedicated pins (CS1, CS2 and CS3) offering various configuration options to the user.
The Power Monitor is responsible for the continuous monitoring of the 12V PSE supply. This allows the system to determine the actual power available from the voltage source and regulate the power drawn from the network accordingly. It also features an adjustable threshold control, allowing users to set a particular current/voltage level where the controller will cut the supply to protect sensitive components from overcurrent/voltage.
The Voltage Regulator comprises two programmable regulators (VREGI, VREGO). VREGI is responsible for detecting the presence of a PD, while VREGO is responsible for sensing the voltage level of the PD. Both of these regulators output a 3.3V logic signal to the controller, which then outputs either the EN1 or EN2 signal, enabling or disabling the power source accordingly.
The TPS2372-3RGWT provides reliable power protection and control for powering Ethernet devices and other network applications. The device is capable of regulating the sourced power, offering a maximum power output of up to 87W in Type 3 Mode. The device monitors the PDs current and voltage and cuts off the supply in case of overcurrent/voltage conditions, making it an ideal power management solution for the Ethernet network.
