TPs2375DR is a 4-Port Power over Ethernet (PoE) Controller from Texas Instruments. It is a single-chip solution for Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) controllers for IEEE 802.3af (15.4 W) and IEEE 802.3at (30 W), so-called Type 1 and Type 2 devices, respectively. This power supply device is also compliant with PoE Plus Enhancements.

The chipsets are typically used in Powered Device (PD) applications in networking, VoIP, IP video and more. It provides four ports, with each port including a differential data receiver and an integrated DC-DC converter with integrated S&H filter.

TPS2375DR PoE controllers offer greater flexibility to deliver up to 30 W per port of power over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or shielded copper cables while also allowing PDs to support a wide range of operating power levels. This device is capable of providing both voltage and current sensing, as well as circuit protection including auto-shutoff, optical shutdown, overvoltage protection and battery current monitor, all to protect both the human user and device from possible harm.

By employing nine port detect states (Hi-Z, no-PD, Type 1, Type 2), TPS2375DR allows for maximum compatibility between existing network infrastructure and end devices. A symmetrical Type 2 HV detection reference voltage from the PD enables maximum power delivery with the most accurate Type 2 PoE detection, and a minimum current draw with no-PD detection (25 mA typical). These devices also feature a low quiescent current of 900 nA, thermal shutdown and protection against sustained overload and short circuit conditions, providing maximum power delivery to the PD. Furthermore, it also includes programmable fast charge current, battery charge voltage, and temperature-dependent current limits for advanced power management and battery charging applications.

Power Management of the TPS2375DR PoE controller is based on the Advanced Power Management (APM) feature that operates only when the PD is enabled. The APM feature contains optimized power transfer algorithms that enable a seamless transition from one power level to another, such as transitioning from 802.3af to 802.3at, or transitioning between ports. This provides for increased device efficiency, resulting in more power delivery to the PD.

Furthermore, the TPS2375DR provides a continuous current monitoring that is proportional to the amount of power allocated to the PD. This feature is used to calculate the time required to charge the battery and deliver power to the PD. This feature also enables programmable current thresholds to alert the system when the PD is not receiving enough power.

TPS2375DR offers complete system-level protection with programmable current, voltage, and temperature-dependent limits, auto-shutoff, optical shutdown and overvoltage protection, as well as integrated battery current monitor. This helps protect the PD, human user, and device from possible damage or harm.
