TPS51113EVM is an evaluation module of Texas Instruments’ TPS51113, which is a step-down (buck) DC/DC converter with 10 A power capability and up to 95% efficiency. The robust TPS51113 allows unregulated input ranging from 9.6 V to 26 V, while it offers an adjustable output voltage between 0.4 V and 5.5 V. This helps the module to find application in the fields of wide input voltage ranges, high output current options, and system efficiency design.
The TPS51113 evaluation module (EVM) helps to quickly and easily test the features of the TPS51113. It contains two steps inside the power path, the input voltage goes first through an EMI filter and then into the DC/DC buck converter stage. The evaluation module includes the components of the TPS51113 in the power path and the necessary control circuitry which is made up of a precision resistor divider and a feedback sense resistor. The output voltage is adjustable down to 0.4V with a jumper setting, and is adjustable up to 5.5V by setting the resistor values.
The TPS51113EVM module is also provided with a full suite of integration characteristics including auto-tracking, internal soft start, external 10 μF compensation, and a 3.3 V (typical) output reference voltage for an external controller. The TPS51113 has an adjustable frequency of 200 kHz, 300 kHz, or 400 kHz, and it’s controlled by an I2C- and PWM-compatible interface. The board also includes a full complement of protections such as over-current, over-voltage, and thermal.
The driving principle of the TPS51113EVM lies in its ability to regulate the output voltage using pulse-width modulation. By selectively switching the voltage on and off for a portion of the cycle, the overall duty cycle is regulated and the output voltage is regulated correspondingly. This is done by comparing the feedback voltage signal to an internal reference voltage and generating the pulse width modulation (PWM) signal accordingly. There is also an internal circuit which can monitor the voltage across the inductor to detect current overloads and thus prevent over-current or over-voltage conditions.
