TPS51123 is a Linear and Switching Voltage Regulator (PMIC) designed by Texas Instruments. It is intended for higher power density off-line (AC) applications, with DC output from 0 V to 24 V and up to 4A of output current. It has on-chip programmable limit for constant output current and adjustable limit for \'short-term\' overload. It utilizes voltage-mode control architecture with leading-edge modulation for improved load and line regulation.

The TPS51123 is targeted to industrial, commercial, white-goods, networking, server and storage applications, where high efficiency and fast transient response are essential. It also features multiple power-good outputs, integrated soft-start/stop, built-in over-temperature, current-limit and over-voltage protection, as well as a wide power input range of 85–265 VAC.

TPS51123 uses a combination of linear and switch regulators. Basically, it is composed of a high-frequency switching regulator and a linear regulator. This allows it to provide both fast transient response and low noise output. At start-up, the switch regulator offers full output current while the linear regulator rapidly charges the output capacitor. When the output voltage reaches the regulation set point, the switch regulator is disabled and in its place the linear regulator works to maintain a stable and precise output.

The TPS51123 has been designed with a voltage-mode control architecture with leading-edge modulation (LEM) for improved load and line regulation. The LEM provides fast transient response to load and line changes, especially at light loads. It works by varying the on-time of the regulator as the output voltage approaches the set point. For factory-set parameters, the TPS51123 provides excellent line and load regulation of +/–1%, and fast transient response with a typical response time of 0.5μs.

In addition, the TPS51123 uses a vertical output MOSFET topology to provide high efficiency, fast transient response and reduced EMI. It also has an adjustable on-chip programmable limit to ensure a constant output current, as well as an adjustable limit to handle \'short-term\' overloads. The TPS51123 can also be configured to be thermal overload tolerant, providing protection from short-term overloads before limiting the output current.
