The TPS51621EVM-602 is an Evaluation Board for DC/DC and AC/DC Off-Line Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS). The board features one TPS51621 synchronous rectified buck controller in a thermally enhanced Thin Quad Flat Package (TQFP) package. The input voltage range is adjustable from 4.75V to 14V AC, and the output voltage can be programmed by a variety of components including resistors, capacitors, and inductors.

The controller incorporates state of the art high speed control circuitry, synchronous rectification, current limiting, short circuit protection, and adjustable minimum on time to ensure stable and reliable power conversion. The TPS51621 also features a very low standby current (<1μA), offering very good efficiency at light load and improved power savings. The board includes an integrated power FET with an Rds(on) of 0.44  Ω MAX and a low gate charge, achieving excellent switching efficiency with minimal power consumption during transition.

The TPS51621EVM-602 board performs synchronous rectification buck topology which is the most common DC/DC converter with a single inductor and one P-channel MOSFET as switches. The main task of the controller in the circuit is to regulate the isolated output voltage by regulating the duty cycle of the output switches on both sides of the inductor. When the P-channel switches are ON, the inductor stores the energy during the switching interval while the current flows from the Drain to the Source of the MOSFETs.

When the P-channel switches are off, the energy stored in the inductor is transferred to the output capacitor to produce the regulated output voltage. This process is repeated continuously to provide a steady output voltage and current to load. This switching process causes inductor current to rise and fall continuously, resulting in output ripples at the output capacitor.

The TPS51621EVM-602 is ideal for use in automotive, industrial, consumer, and computer applications. It is capable of delivering up to 10A load current and offers excellent efficiency up to 96%. The evaluation board can be used to evaluate the performance of the TPS51621 device and to quickly deploy applications using synchronous rectification buck topology.
