TPS51631RSMR Application Field and Working Principle

The TPS51631RSMR is a high efficiency, low quiescent current, high switching frequency integrated circuit (IC) voltage regulator with a wide input voltage range and output current capability. It is well-suited for battery-powered portable applications, as well as automotive, industrial and consumer applications that require high power, low noise and wide temperature performance.

TPS51631RSMR is a fixed output voltage step-down switch mode power conversion controller. The IC maintains an input-to-output voltage configured by the internal RESET pin voltage, and provides a closed-loop control system in order to maintain a constant output voltage. The IC has a low quiescent current of 6mA, and operates at a switching frequency of 2MHz. The device is packaged in a tiny 8-lead TDFN (ThermoElectric Dual Flat Non-leaded) package, making it suitable for space-constrained applications such as consumer electronics, automotive, and IoT products.

The TPS51631RSMR IC integrates a high-efficiency MOSFET switch, a fast current source and adaptive slope compensation, resulting in a fast transient response and low output voltage ripple. The device also includes protection features such as over-current, over-temperature and under-voltage, as well as programmable soft-start,power-on reset and automatic power-good flag generation. The TPS51631RSMR also features a Sleep mode for improved power savings.

The working principle of the TPS51631RSMR is based on a closed loop control system that employs a voltage feedback loop to maintain proper output voltage levels. The device operates in a transition between the internal MOSFET operating in a buck topology, either in a Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) or Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM), based on load current. In CCM mode, the inductor current is always above the minimum current required to prevent core from entering DCM, whereas in DCM the inductor current cycle is between zero and a peak value. The output of the overall circuit is regulated based on the difference between the input and output voltages, which is measured and the output is adjusted. In CCM, the voltage on the internal MOSFET is regulated by adjusting the duty cycle of the MOSFET while in DCM the MOSFET is in a switching state and the output voltage is regulated by the frequency of the switching cycle.
