Texas Instruments’ TPS5410DR is a 1-A synchronous step-down dc-dc converter that enables highly efficient power conversion from input voltages of 4.5–32 V to output voltages as low as 0.6 V. This synchronous switching regulator family achieves up to 95 percent efficiency. Adaptive on-time and cycle-by-cycle current limit allow for tight loop control, resulting in fast dynamic response and excellent line and load tolerance over temperature. The TPS5410DR also features adjustable switching frequency operating from 500 kHz to 1 MHz. This range allows the user to optimize their application footprint, efficiency, and cost by selecting the best operating frequency and external components.

TPS5410DR Application Field and Working Principle

The TPS5410DR is a versatile nonsynchronous buck converter, suitable for applications that require low input/output voltages, such as powering microprocessors, FPGAs and other field-programmable gate array devices. It offers excellent efficiency and requires only one external voltage-setting resistor. Operating in the fixed frequency mode, the device switches with a fixed frequency of 500kHz to 1MHz, depending on the configured voltage setting resistor. In both fixed frequency and adaptive frequency modes, the TPS5410DR offers low noise and low output ripple, making it a noise-free solution for high frequency applications.

The TPS5410DR has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, and is available in an SOT-23-5 package. Equipped with Enable Control and logic-level output, it can be shut down easily, saving both power and space.

Design

The internal block diagram of the TPS5410DR includes the following features: a voltage reference, an on-time comparator, a peak current comparator, a reference divider, a dead-time control circuit, a driver, two output switches and a single internal clock. These components operate in synchronization with the internal clock and determine the switching on and off time of the voltage switch.

The voltage reference is an integrated voltage reference that sets the output voltage, usually by setting a voltage divider network connected to the FB pin on the inactive part. The difference between the voltage at the FB pin of the converter and the internal reference voltage is compared to the on-time comparator. This comparator works together with the reference divider and the external resistor connected to the Remote Sense pin. This results in the output voltage of the step-down converter. The current comparator monitors the output voltage and the Transistor Out pin, which represents the switch collector voltage, to detect a predetermined over current limit.

If the current exceeded the preset limited, the dead-time control circuit turns on the integrated driver, which closes the two switches. This interrupts the connection between the output and input of the device, resulting in a decreased current. The output switches are also controlled by the internal clock generator as the on-time and off-time of the device is set with the clock. The dead-time control circuit is used to avoid the device entering an undesired state when the two switches are simultaneously turned on.

The TPS5410DR is protected from input overvoltage and overcurrent by a multiphase power MOSFET. On-chip safety shutdown circuitry monitors the operation of the MOSFETs and shuts down the output if an overvoltage or overcurrent event is detected.
