Power management integrated circuit (PMIC) is an important component that can provide the right electrical signals to the peripheral device in an electronic product. How It Works
The TPS5420DR is a voltage regulator module designed to step-down the input voltage of up to 44V to a lower, adjustable output voltage of 0.6V to 5.5V. It relies on a switch-mode, step-down converter system that typically delivers a load current 1.5A or higher. This DC–DC switching regulator consists of an internal power switch, an internal oscillator, a PWM control circuit, a fault protection circuit and a power Schottky diode.
This step-down DC–DC regulator can be operated in either pulse frequency modulation mode or pulse width modulation mode, depending on the user’s requirement and input voltage. The output voltage will remain stable even during sudden changes in the load current or input voltage. Since it operates in discontinuous mode, the regulator will provide improved noise performance while switching.
The regulator\'s power switch is connected between the input and output voltage, and when it is activated, the excess energy is stored in the output inductor. When the user’s input voltage does not reach the desired output voltage, the energy stored in the output inductor is then released to the output for continuous operation. The oscillator controls the frequency of the power switch, thus regulating the switching interval of the pulsed output.
There are various protection features integrated in the TPS5420DR. These include an overcurrent protection (OCP), overvoltage protection (OVP), undervoltage protection (UVP), thermal shutdown (TSD) and reverse current protection (RCP). Additionally, the internal soft-start and hiccup mode can guarantee a suitable output when switching from no load to heavy load, preventing output voltage and load current from overshooting or undershooting.
