TPS54225EVM-538 is an evaluation board, utilizing for off-line switch-mode power supply (SMPS). It integrated TPS54225—a 5 A, 10 V synchronous step-down converter with integrated FETs. The board is designed for 5 V input and output to 3.3 V. It includes the control circuit on board to provide protection feature. The board is essentially composed of the indicator, start switch, two current sense resistors, an input capacitor, output capacitor, an IC, connector for power path, and output voltage adjustable trimmer.

In the evaluation board, the IC TPS54225 comprises one-versatile voltage regulator technology package which contains an on-chip PWM controller and two N-MOSFET power switches and some small components. It is enabled by using adaptive on-time technique, to sense and regulate current accurately to optimize the efficiency. The pins of the package are served as their designated purposes, such as soft-start, power good signal, enable, and so on. The enable pin can also be used to put the IC into a low quiescent current shutdown mode.

The mains supply is connected to the input of the power path connector on the TPS54225EVM-538 board, upon which a safety counter EMIFIL is used to avoid any potential fire hazard. The transformation is directly by two power MOSFETs via gate driver which is embedded inside the TPS54225 package. The applied start switch on board serves as the activating feature to initiate the operation.
