Working Principle

When the input supply voltage exceeds the device\'s threshold voltage, the voltage at VIN is greater than the reference voltage that is provided at the FB pin. Thus, the error amplifier will be activated and will turn ON the internal high-side and low-side MOSFETs. The high-side MOSFET acts as a switch, allowing the input supply voltage to the output filter capacitor and load. The low-side MOSFET, on the other hand, is used to discharge the output filter capacitor. When the voltage on the output filter capacitor and load becomes higher than the FB pin, the error amplifier switches the high-side MOSFET OFF and the low-side MOSFET ON, thus discharging the output filter capacitor and load. This switching action of the MOSFETs continues, forming a continuous loop and maintaining the output voltage at a regulated level.

The TPS54228DR provides a high-efficiency and low noise power conversion solution for DC-DC Voltage Regulation. It has a wide input voltage range of 4.0-V to 28-V and a high output voltage accuracy of ±3%. Additionally, the device includes thermal shutdown, UVLO and OTP protection, as well as adjustable soft-start and over-current protection.
