Texas Instruments offers a DC-DC buck regulator with its TPS54233DG4. This device is a typical switching regulator, where the output changes by manipulating the input via a cycle of on and off periods for a switching element such as a field effect transistor (FET). In this device, the FET is additionally protected from over-current conditions by a current limit circuit. The switching regulator is, in essence, a voltage regulator comprising all of the active components necessary for regulating a DC output voltage from a DC input voltage.

When the P-channel switch is in an \'on\' state, the drain voltage of the MOSFET switch is at a low voltage. This reduces the voltage at the nodes connected to the switch and from there, the output voltage is regulated. The drain voltage of the MOSFET switch is then increased which results in the increase of voltage at the nodes connected to the switch and from there, the output voltage increases until the second stage is reached which is the point at which the output voltage reaches its desired value.
The TPS54233DG4 then uses the inductor to transfer energy from the input stage to the output stage and the internal feedback voltage loop remains active to regulate the amount of energy transferred to the output stage. The internal feedback voltage loop consists of an error amplifier, an internal current source and a loop filter. The error amplifier is responsible for sensing the output voltage and adjusts the voltage across the MOSFET switch to maintain the desired output voltage. The internal current source is used to set the maximum current of the load and the loop filter is used to dampen oscillations and to reduce the noise of the voltage regulator.
