The TPS54294PWPR is a DC-to-DC switching regulator IC with integrated switches from Texas Instruments. This device is targeted at low input voltage and fast load transient applications. It is designed to provide up to 5A of regulated output current and up to 6V of output voltage. Working Principle

The TPS54294PWPR is a complete synchronous buck regulator integrated with several power MOSFETs. It includes 3-input reference, tracking, programmable current limit, and synchronous rectification. Its internal controllers incorporate advanced features to provide maximum flexibility and accuracy.

The device starts with an internal power-up sequence, which sets the proper VREF voltage and turns on the synchronous rectifying MOSFETs. The voltage at the feedback is compared to the reference voltage. If the voltage difference is larger than the programmed window, then the duty cycle of the switch will be changed. The duty cycle can be programmed for optimal efficiency with the use of external resistors. The number of external resistors depends on the value of the output voltage.

The current limit is determined by the voltage drop across the sense resistor on the return and the programmed gain of the sense amplifier. If the peak inductor current exceeds a certain level at the end of the on-time, then the switch will be shut off sooner than the calculated duty cycle. This over-current protection feature helps in preventing device to latch up due to possible failed load transients. The output voltage is controlled by a precision voltage reference and an external compensation network, which can be programmed to provide an optimal response.
