Working Principle

The TPS54331GDR is a voltage-mode, synchronous PWM buck regulator that utilizes a fixed frequency, voltage-mode architecture with a user-adjustable operating frequency up to 10MHz. The frequency is externally adjusted by the resistor connected to the FREQ pin. The inductor current is sensed through an sense resistor connected in the low-side ground return path; an external switching frequency set by the frequency select pin. The average inductor current is sensed and used to generate a control signal for the error amplifier to regulate the output voltage.

The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage from the feedback pin to the reference voltage, and then outputs a proportional error signal to the PWM Controller which then modulates the duty cycle of the power switches to achieve the desired output voltage. As the set frequency nears its maximum value, the device transitions into pulse-skipping mode in order to maintain an appropriate duty cycle. The TPS54331GDR includes an integrated high-side PMOS switch for power savings. Additionally, the device provides a user-selectable enable pin. The device is fully protected against over-voltage, over-temperature, and current overload conditions, ensuring the device long-term reliability.
