TPS54388QRTERQ1 Application Field and Working Principle
The TPS54388QRTERQ1 is a monolithic synchronous step-down DC/DC regulator with an output current up to 8A in a very small package, designed to provide a high current and tight load regulation. This device is engineered to feature fast transient response, low shutdown current, excellent line and load regulation, and wide input voltage range. The output voltage is internally adjustable from 0.8V to 4.4V and the minimum voltage dropped is 0.4V.

Working Principle of the TPS54388QRTERQ1
The TPS54388QRTERQ1 operates in either DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) or CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode) depending on the output load. In DCM, the inductor current completely discharges during each switching cycle. In CCM, there is always a short period of current flow in the inductor. The advantage of the DCM operation is the reduction of the current ripple and its associated output voltage disturbances. The majority of the energy is transferred to the output in a single large burst of current. In CCM operation, the inductor current flows in two stages, resulting in a smaller current ripple than DCM and improved efficiency over the entire load range.
The TPS54388QRTERQ1 uses an Adaptive On-Time control concept to guarantee fast transient response and an external voltage reference is used to regulate the output voltage. The device also features power-down and thermal shutdown modes, soft-start circuitry and selectable current limit.
To preserve the high performance and tight load regulation, the switch node is regulated using voltage sense pins. When the voltage at the switch node falls to 0.4V, a pulse is issued to the feedback pin to reduce the output voltage and increase the switching frequency. This allows the TPS54388QRTERQ1 to reach very low output voltages and maintain tight load regulation with very low output voltages.
