TPS54540DDA Application Field and Working Principle

Introduction

The TPS54540DDA is a 6A buck switching regulator device developed by Texas Instruments which then easily step down VIN from up to 28V to the regulated VOUT value which the user can set based on its requirement. TPS54540DDA is a wide VIN range synchronous buck DC/DC converter with integrated high and low side MOSFETs. It is targeted at applications needing up to 6A output current and moderate power conversion efficiency (greater than 80%). It provides flexibility to tradeoff between cost, size, noise and efficiency by selecting between internal or external compensation, external soft-start and enabling or disabling internal catch diode. Working Principle

TPS54540DDA has an internal PWM controller, pass transistor (N-channel MOSFET), compensation elements and a few current monitoring circuits. A block diagram of a generic buck DC/DC converter is shown below.The input voltage is regulated by varying the duty cycle of the Pass N-Channel MOSFET. The peak value of switch current is not chosen as fixed, but is kept close to the actual value of average load current by comparing the voltage developed across the Current Sense Resistor with a reference voltage. The output voltage is regulated to two or three digits of accuracy over a wide range of loaded Transient disturbances. The output voltage is sensed and compared to an internal voltage reference which generates error signal. This error signal is then applied to the PWM controller. If the output voltage is varying beyond the range of regulation, the PWM controller modifies the duty cycle in order to return the output voltage to the reference voltage.
