APS54627EVM-052 is an evaluation board for APS54627 which is designed for high power density off-line switch mode power supplies. The board is designed to provide the user with a complete solution for exploring the capabilities of the APS54627 SMPS. It is a highly integrated device dedicated to offline SMPS applications such as PC power supplies, PC motherboards, wireless base station and communication. It offers continuous constant power output and high efficiency at high frequency.

The design of the APS54627EVM-052 is based on the second generation PWM controller, the APS54627. It is an ultra-low power device with a small foot-print and high efficiency. It provides a comprehensive feature set for off-line SMPS operation including primary and secondary peak current mode control, an integrated advanced current sense comparator, programmable constant off time control, and a programmable under-voltage lockout. It also supports soft start, adjustable frequency, and integrated over-temperature protection. In addition, the device has adjustable peak voltage for improved power control, and a power factor corrected linear mode for improved THD performance.

With an internal 3.3V power supply, the APS54627EVM-052 board is designed to support an input voltage ranging from 100VAC to 265VAC for universal AC input. This board is also designed to support an output voltage from 3.3V to 24V with an adjustable current ratings up to 35A - allowing it to power many applications.

The power topology of the APS54627EVM-052 is a flyback converter, which is commonly used in off-line SMPS applications. The flyback converter consists of a switch, a transformer, an output diode, and a filter capacitor. When a voltage is applied to the primary winding of the transformer, the voltage is induced on the secondary winding. The switch is then used to turn on and off the current flow in the primary winding of the transformer. As the switch turns on, current starts to flow in the primary winding and a voltage is induced on the secondary winding. As the switch is turned off, the current in the primary winding stops flowing, and the transformer’s magnetic field collapses which causes a voltage to be induced on the secondary winding in the opposite direction. This process is then repeated continually and the output voltage is then rectified and filtered by the diode and capacitor to provide the desired output voltage.

The design of the APS54627EVM-052 is designed for power factor correction and improved line harmonics. It utilizes the APS54627’s average current mode control (ACMC) which utilizes the line current waveform to calculate the power factor and voltage gain ratio to reduce the system’s THD. The design also features synchronous rectification which improves power conversion efficiency and reduces the losses associated with conventional diode rectification.

The APS54627EVM-052 also features output over voltage protection, which prevents the output voltage from exceeding its stated maximum voltage. This is done by sensing the sensed output voltage and comparing it to the over voltage threshold set by the user. If the output voltage exceeds the set threshold, the switch is turned off to prevent further damage to the system.

The APS54627EVM-052 can be used to test various features of the APS54627, such as propagation delay, constant off time, peak current detect range, as well as other primary side protection features. It is a comprehensive evaluation board that offers the user a complete solution for exploring the capabilities of the APS54627 SMPS for off-line applications.
