TPS54672PWP is an integrated regulator that combines high performance control circuitry, along with power MOSFETs, for both non-synchronous buck and synchronous buck applications. It is a low-input voltage, synchronous-buck DC-DC CTRL™ controller with optimization for low-side MOSFETs. It enables an all-round buck power solution with low quiescent current, high efficiency and minimized size.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

The TPS54672PWP is designed to handle a wide input voltage range, allowing designers flexibility while increasing efficiency across all operating conditions. The device dynamically and automatically adjusts the switching frequency to maintain a constant frequency and output power even if the input voltage deviates from its nominal rating. Designed to work in both synchronous and non-synchronous modes, this device offers flexibility in design and switching frequency. In the synchronous mode, the control loop forces the high-side switch to be off at the same time as the low-side switch.

The low-side effects of the synchronous operation are minimized as the input capacitor can be up to 100 µF. With a 36 V synchronous buck using 4 µA current, the device ensures excellent efficiency across all operating conditions. The device also features two independent low power threshold levels, enabling the designer to lower the regulation ripple above certain input voltage levels.

In addition to the general features of the TPS54672, this integrated regulator includes two integral PWM control circuits, an input supply sequencer, auto-propagation delay, as well as an external fast-transition control circuit. The unique design includes detection for both external analog signals and digital signals, allowing for additional control flexibility. The device also offers a Low Temperature Enable, which provides temperature protection when operating in higher temperatures.

To ensure excellent thermal performance, the TPS54672 has four built-in thermal protection circuits that can be triggered based on temperature, transient load conditions, and excessive frequency. This ensures that the device continues to operate at its optimal performance even in the toughest of environments.

The device also features a fast transient response to regulate the voltage within the specified margin of error. To minimize power losses in the device, the TPS54672 employs a low impedance gate driver circuit, allowing for quick voltage transitions with minimal power dissipation.
