Working Principle

The TPS54821 is designed to provide a regulated, isolated DC output voltage from a wide 4.5 V to 21 V input voltage. It incorporates a single-channel synchronous buck controller and an integrated gate driver with an optional Schottky diode and external power MOSFET switch. The output voltage is programmed by the on-die regulator with I2C serial registers. It takes a single external resistor to program the output voltage.

The TPS54821 also features adjustable over-voltage and under-voltage protection, adjustable current limit (adjustable with the resistor connected to ILIM pin), adjustable soft-start, current-limit efficient and thermally protection. All features are enabled with the on-chip I2C registers.

An external resistor is used to program output target voltage (VOUT) on TPS54821EVMs. An external capacitor and resistor forms a voltage-mode-control loop to generate fast and tight regulation. It also provides short-circuit protection, overload protection and thermal protection.The TPS54821EVMs are tested for output accuracy, output voltage regulation, line regulation, load regulation, efficiency, guaranteed power, transient response, and current limit.
