TPS54972EVM-222 is an evaluation module designed to demonstrate the features of TPS54972 integrated circuit, the latest device of the highly integrated 5A synchronous step-down DC-DC converter family. It can be used in variety of application fields with its highly efficient operation over a wide input voltage range and variety of output voltage configurations. This device provides high level of integration resulting in a very small solution size for end applications.
In comparison with the existing synchronous power management ICs, the TPS54972EVM-222 supports an extremely wide range of input voltage. It is capable of managing an input voltage range from 4V to 32V with a 0.6V minimum input voltage differential. It supports a broad operating ambient temperature range of 0-127 °C, and can handle a highly efficient peak current of 4A and peak load current of 5A.
The TPS54972EVM-222 serves as an engineered evaluation module, featuring a synchronous 5A regulator with selectable voltage output, such as 2.5V/3.3V/3.3V/5V/12V/2.2V/1.2V etc., and two selectable output current limits of 5A and 4A. Furthermore, it provides an integrated protection function such as thermal shutdown (TSD). All those functions make TPS54972EVM-222 an attractive choice for a large range of off-line SMPS applications, such as motor-control, consumer appliances, consumer electronics, portable device, and LED lighting.
The TPS54972EVM-222 also comes with the high integration. It has an internal Schottky diode, internal power switch, an internal synchronization detection and an internal reference voltage detector. Additionally, it is also capable of connecting to an external reference voltage output, allowing users to have more flexibility when it comes to variations and supply voltage adjustments. It also offers precision voltage regulation capability with the accuracy of ±2.5%. All these features make the TPS54972EVM-222 an attractive solution for a wide range of DC/DC conversion with high current SMPS applications.
The working principle of the TPS54972EVM-222 is based on its integrated synchronous rectification converter, which is capable of providing efficient, reliable power conversion. It works by implementing a controller which is fed with the output voltage feedback from an output divider. In normal condition, the integrated power switch is kept open and the PWM signal goes low for a short time, resulting in the current regulation with minimum output voltage ripple. In order to lower the output voltage, the switch is kept on, so that the current can flow through the inductor. The inductor energy is then transformed into the output capacitor, where it gets stored until the next PWM cycle.
In order to support high efficiency operation, the TPS54972EVM-222 can dynamically detect input voltage, and accordingly adjust the internal DCR-Based current limit. It can also reduce the quiescent current by lowering the switching frequency. With the adaptive on-time control loop, it enables the device to minimize the input ripple current and the output voltage rippling. Therefore, the overall SMPS system is able to reach the highest power efficiency level.
To sum up, the TPS54972EVM-222 integration provides up to 96% power efficiency and greater-than-90% power transfer efficiency, which is incredibly attractive for a wide range of off-line input-to-output voltage conversion applications. It has an extreme input voltage range of 4V-32V and is capable of making the output voltage adjustable. It can remain stable in a wide temperature range of 0°C to 80°C, making it suitable for even the more demanding applications.
