Working Principle

The TPS63012YFFT is a synchronous step-down (buck) DC-DC converter which is comprised of an internal high-side power switch and a low-side power switch, controlled by an integrate Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller. The power switches are connected in a half-bridge circuit whose duty cycle can be adjusted by the controller. The action of the switches pulse-width modulation (PWM) control the output voltage by regulating the time the switches are on.

If the target voltage is higher than the output voltage, the PWM controller sets the duty cycle to a value greater than 50% and vice versa. To minimize switching losses, the maximum duty cycle is set to 95%. The frequency of the PWM control voltage is set by the external oscillator. The output voltage is continuously monitored by the PWM controller and it is free running. The TPS63012YFFT provides output voltage tracking feature, making it ideal for multi-rail systems.

The TPS63012YFFT has several power-saving features for improved battery life. The IC has an adjustable off-time control which allows the device to switch at a lower frequency, affording greater efficiency than fixed frequency operation. Additionally, it features an optional programmable low-power-mode (LPM) which reduces the output voltage ripple, quiescent current, and switching frequency when the load is light, saving additional battery life.

The TPS63012YFFT is easy to use and can be controlled with a simple logic level signal. With the rise of the logic level, the device starts switching and with the fall of it, the output can be put into a sleep mode. In addition, the device offers the following protection features: under-voltage protection, over-voltage protection, over-current protection, and thermal shut-down protection.
