The TPSMB180A works on the principle of thermal-electric bi-stability. When the applied voltage exceeds the clamp voltage, a highly conductive path is created between the two cathodes, allowing current to flow. When the transient voltage is removed, the device automatically resets to its original state. This resetting action is accomplished by a thermal expansion mechanism that causes the silicon material to expand, breaking the conductive path between the two cathodes. The TPSMB180A is able to respond to fast transients in less than 1ns with rise times of less than 5ns.

The main applications of TPSMB180A include automotive electronics, industrial electronics, consumer electronics, and medical electronics. It is used to protect lightning-induced transients, power supply transients, ESD, and switching transients. It is also suitable for AC and DC switch over, clamp overvoltage protection, high speed bus protection, and input/output protection. The TPSMB180A can be used in circuits exposed to up to 6kV electrical transients, or up to +/-3kV ESD.
