TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are an important component in many circuits, providing an effective means to protect the circuit and components involved. The TPSMD16CA is a silicon unidirectional transient voltage suppressor, designed to protect various types of sensitive electronic equipment, such as computers, from voltage spikes and other transient voltage events.

The TPSMD16CA diode is designed in a moulded SOD-123 package, which features an integrated semiconductor device, two pins and a tab. It has a nominal breakdown voltage of 15V, with a trigger current ranging from 4A to 10A. It also has a high peak pulse power dissipation of 400W (10/1000 uS) to 900W (8/20uS), which enables it to protect against power-related transients.

The TPSMD16CA diode has a wide range of applications. In terms of working principle, the TPSMD16CA diode is designed to be very specific with its protection, being able to divert or “clamp” transient pulses outside of the normal operating range of the equipment it protects. It does this by utilizing its breakdown voltage and threshold trigger current.

When the voltage in the circuit exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode, a current surge will be created, and the diode will “conduct”, redirecting this surge into the low resistance path of the ground, and away from the transistor and the rest of the circuit. This process is known as “clamping”, or “clamping voltage”. Once the voltage on the circuit has dropped below the breakdown voltage, the diode will return to its original state, allowing the device to operate normally.

In conclusion, the TPSMD16CA diode is an effective and versatile TVS diode, offering a wide range of protection capabilities, and suitable for use in many automotive and industrial applications.
