Tantalum capacitors are electrolytic capacitors. They are constructed with porous tantalum anodes and cathodes with a special electrolyte solution sandwiched in between them. The electrolyte solution acts as the dielectric between the two electrodes, and its properties determine the characteristics of the component.The tantalum anodes have a thin dielectric oxide film on them which acts like an insulator. This film can be either a tantalum pentoxide film or an oxynitride layer. The thickness of the dielectric layer determines the capacitance of the component. The greater the capacitance, the thicker the dielectric oxide layer is. Since the oxide film has a low dielectric constant, it makes the component an ideal choice for high frequency applications. The component consists of two electrodes, a conductive electrolyte solution and an insulating dielectric layer between them. The component is polarized so that current can flow through it in one direction only. When a voltage is applied, a current flows through the capacitor. This causes an electrical charge to accumulate on the anode which attracts positively charged ions from the electrolyte solution. As more charge accumulates, the attractive force becomes greater and the ions are drawn through the liquid to the anode. At the same time, electrons are ejected from the cathode as they are attracted to the anode. The process continues until the voltage across the component is equal to the voltage applied. Upon reaching the capacitance, the ions stop flowing and the capacitor stops charging. The device reaches its maximum capacitance with the dielectric oxide layer forming a thick, impenetrable barrier between the two electrodes.Conclusion
