Tantalum Capacitors

Working Principle

Tantalum capacitors are constructed using highly purified tantalum powder impregnated with a manganese dioxide or organic polymer dielectric material. This dielectric material is electrically connected with tinned leads or a wire bond to the end caps of the capacitor. The prototypical TR3V107K010C0200 capacitor consists of two sections separated by two end caps, filled with a solid dielectric to form a single capacitor.

In operation, the tantalum capacitor charges up as current passes through it. Its capacitance increases until it reaches its maximum charge. The amount of charge stored in the capacitor determines its electrical characteristics, such as its capacitance, leakage current and ESR. The thicker the dielectric, the higher the capacitance value of the capacitor.

Tantalum capacitors are described as “polarized” because they require a certain polarity for the voltage to be applied in order for the capacitor to function properly.
