The TRSF3238CDWG4, manufactured by Texas Instruments, is an integrated, galvanically insulated, high speed data link transmit/receive (transceiver) controller with three 1/2-duplex transmission channels. The TRSF3238CDWG4 transceiver is optimized for industrial control, automotive and telecom applications, and is designed for high speed data rate operating from the DC to 28 GBaud.

The TRSF3238CDWG4 transceiver utilizes a Silicon opto-isolated digital optical link for data rates up to 28 GBaud and provides a single-ended 0-3.3V CMOS compatible interface for a maximum sustained data rate of 28 Gbps. The device includes a high speed, low power, linearly regulated voltage regulator to power the core, and a high output current driver to power the optical link. The integrated clock and data recovery (CDR) capability sets the conversion rate and jitter requirements of the data.

The device includes a low jitter PLL generating the reference clock for data transmission, a low-power receiver circuit, a high-gain optical link control with a range up to 28 GBaud, and a three-level constant-current driver to control the output power of the opto-isolated optical link.

The data transmission is performed by a low-power high-speed CMOS shift register that converts the up to 28-bit digital data stream into a state-of-the-art, digital opto-isolated serial data link. By exploiting a dedicated phase-adaptive CDR circuit, the transmitter data rate of the TRSF3238CDWG4 can be adjusted up to 28 Gbps. The digital data transmitted across the link is encoded into a pattern of optical pulses of different intensity. The pattern of the optical pulses is determined by the source device and translates into a series of analog electrical pulses, which are then integrated and demodulated by the TRSF3238CDWG4 transceiver on the receiver side. These pulses are then converted into digital data.

The TRSF3238CDWG4 is intended for industrial control, automotive and telecom applications and utilizing this transceiver for data transmission can allow for a reliable, low-cost and secure transmission over a distance of several meters in a fraction of the time required for traditional wiring.
