Optical sensors are used for sensing light signals and then converting them into appropriate electrical signals for further processing and controlling purpose. Phototransistors, as a type of optical sensor, are specially designed to detect light signals and respond accordingly in the form of electrical signals. And one of the most common phototransistors is the TSKS5421SX01-GSZ, which is widely used for some specific applications and has the principle of working.
TSKS5421SX01-GSZ is an NPN silicon phototransistor, whose response to a light signal is between 4.5 to 6 mA. It is actually a bipolar transistor, whose operation mode is to draw its collector current in proportion to the level of light detected. It is commonly used for sensitive detection of infrared remote control signals, due to its sharp spectral response in the infrared region. Since it can detect light signals with a high frequency range from 0.4MHz to 8MHz, it is more suitable for digital signal detection compared to the analog phototransistors.
The operating principle of the TSKS5421SX01-GSZ is to have the received light signal to be converted into electrical current. The current induced by the light signal is then amplified through base-collector resistance, which further applies to the load resistance for further processing and controlling. The gain of the phototransistor is normally adjusted based on the current passing the phototransistor. By applying the reverse bias voltage at the base-collector junction, and the resistance at the base-collector junction becomes thinner, the gain of the phototransistor is increased.
In some of the applications, TSKS5421SX01-GSZ are often used as the medium to detect the intensity of light, and to trigger appropriate actions based on the level of light intensity detected. For instance, in some of the smart appliances, the photocoupler can be used to measure the light intensity in the environment and then the circuit is triggered based on the sensed light intensity, such as adjusting the brightness of the LCD display in response to the change of light intensity. In addition, this phototransistor can be used for generating turn-off delay control signal, for electric appliance anti-theft purpose by detecting pulse light beam.
The TSKS5421SX01-GSZ phototransistor is a quite essential device for detecting light signal and converting it into electrical signals. It is suitable for those areas and applications requiring sensitive light detection and quick response. By conducting reverse bias voltage, the gain of the phototransistor can be increased, so as to handle higher current level.
