Working principle:
A linear regulator is a three-terminal electronic component that requires an input voltage slightly higher than the output voltage in order to regulate that output voltage. The devices comprises of four functional blocks: the input voltage limiting and decoupling, the internal power diode, the error amplifier, and the pass element and output decoupling. The pass element is usually MOSFET, that is controlled by external resistors and/or voltages.
When the input voltage is greater than the output voltage, the MOSFET is allowed to conduct and a steady current flows through the pass element and drops the voltage across the load. The voltage drop across the MOSFET is typically granted to an internal error amplifier. This amplifier is compared with an external reference voltage, and causes the MOSFET to increase or decrease the current flow according to the result of the comparison. This event maintains the output voltage at the desired level. Due to the operation of this voltage feedback loop, the output voltage is regulated and the supply can account for load current fluctuations.
