The concept of power factor correction is not a new one. It was first studied in the 1870s and has been explored ever since. Power factor correction (PFC) is the use of power electronics devices, such as capacitors and inductors, to mitigate the effects of voltage and current unbalances in AC power, resulting in improved efficiency, power quality and reduced losses.

The operation of UCC28180D PFC device can be very easily explained through its fundamental structure. It consists of two main sections - the main section and the control section. The main section has active components, such as diodes, capacitors, transformers, inductors and switches.
