The UCC28231PW is a voltage-mode DC-DC Switching Controller with advanced features, belonging to the PMIC Voltage Regulators product family. This device uses pulse width modulation (PWM) for on-line switching at high frequency thus converting a DC input voltage to a tighter dc output voltage of higher efficiency. In addition, it has enhanced features such as frequency dithering, slope compensation, and soft-start.It offers programmable current limit with an internal small signal slope compensation to reduce shoot-through current.The UCC28231PW is ideal for point of load (POL) switched converter applications like processor cores, low-power FPGAs, ASICs and memory modules. Examples of converters with UCC28231PW include isolated flyback converters and isolated buck converters. It has an adjustable frequency oscillator and insulated gate pulse width (PGW) modulator with adjustable slew rate.The working principle of the UCC28231PW is based on pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. When the load current increases, the PWM controller increases the duty cycle of the switching pulse.When the load current decreases, the PWM controller decreases the duty cycle of the switching pulse.The frequency of the switching pulse is adjustable with the aid of an oscillator and can range from 100kHz to 1MHz. Therefore, the output voltage remains constant no matter how the load varies.The device also has a current-mode control scheme to optimize the peak current zero voltage switching of the power devices. This helps in optimizing the efficiency of the system and also reduces the EMI and RFI. This is accomplished by integrating the current loop and voltage loop into one single loop and operating with a single-cycle current limit with slim compensation.The UCC28231PW also has an adjustable lock-in frequency to minimize the output voltage ripple across load transients. The output voltage ripple is minimized as the input voltage changes due to power line disturbances.The device has cycle-by-cycle shutdown and also has an adjustable soft-start circuit which slowly ramps up the output voltage from 0V to the desired levels during start-up.
