Power Factor Correction (PFC) is an important part of power management, designed to improve the quality of power supply and efficiency of electrical systems while providing maximum safety. The PMIC - PFC family of products from UCC28500DWTRG4 provides one of the highest levels of power factor correction available in the market today, with options for both single-phase and three-phase applications.
At its core, the UCC28500DWTRG4 PMIC-PFC family consists of a single-chip, active PFC controller (in wide input range) and integrated protection circuits. This device is capable of providing both PFC and synchronous rectification functions in one package with a wide range of bidirectional and complementary switching options. The controller contains an intelligent charge pump, active current balancing and loop control circuitry designed to ensure tight current sharing within the system.
Specifically, the UCC28500DWTRG4 PMIC –PFC provides reliable, high-performance and accurate operation up to 650V, with a wide input voltage range. This device offers a synchronous rectification stage in addition to the traditional PFC stage. These stages are integrated together within the same package and independently controlled, resulting in a high efficiency power conversion stage.
Working principle wise,a PFC converter is a controlled AC-to-DC converter in which the input ac power is “shaped” so that the current drawn from the voltage source is equal to the current that the load consumes from the dc bus, these two currents will remain in phase. When this is achieved, the power factor of the input is close to unity and the input current waveform has a sinusoidal shape similar to the input voltage waveform. To achieve this, UCC28500DWTRG4 employs a two-stage approach which includes an input AC-DC converter and a DC-DC converter.
The first stage of the UCC28500DWTRG4 is the input ac-dc converter that bridges the gap between the input sinusoidal voltage and the rectified dc voltage. It works by converting the input ac voltage into a non-sinusoidal rectified dc voltage with low buffer capacitance. This rectified voltage then travels to the output voltage buck stage which is the second stage of the PFC converter. This servo feedback loop then compares the output voltage to the setpoint and adjusts the current in the power stages accordingly.
The power factor correction circuit of UCC28500DWTRG4 also consists of other components such as filters, transformer switches and control circuitry. The use of these components helps to reduce noise, prevent oscillation and improve the durability of the device. This is especially important for applications in which the switch frequency is high. Furthermore, UCC28500DWTRG4 has two types of protection: over-current protection and soft-start protection. The over-current protection prevents the PFC from outputting more than the specified amount of current and the soft-start feature reduces the possibility of inrush currents under normal operating conditions.
Therefore, UCC28500DWTRG4 can be applied in a wide range of applications, such as air conditioners, food and beverage machines, motors and high-end power supply systems. In addition, this series of PMIC-PFC can also be used to provide power factor correction circuit in TV, LCD monitors, and lighting applications.
