The UCC28C45DR is a high performance pulse width modulation (PWM) controller designed specifically for off-line and DC to DC converter applications. The device is delivered in an 8-pin packages and has an improved high-voltage performance (500V) compared to other similar devices. Featuring advanced active burst mode, line under/over voltage protection and precise frequency synchronization for better performance, this controller is suitable for a wide range of electronic products, such as cell phones, laptops, servers, and home entertainment systems.

Application Field and Working Principle

The UCC28C45DR power switches are ideal for the regulatioin of low power DC to DC converter applications. It incorporates a high-voltage capability and an advanced active burst mode for greater current efficiencies. In addition, the device features precise frequency synchronization and protection against line under/over voltages.

At the heart of the UCC28C45DR application is the “Pulse Width Modulator” (PWM), which works by generating a series of rapid on/off cycles to create a steady output-voltage since the average output voltage is proportional to the duty cycle. In order to achieve the desired output voltage, the PWM controls the voltage-to-ground by varying the pulse width of the switching cycle. The UCC28C45DR device is composed of an error amplifier, a voltage reference circuit and a PWM controller. The error amplifier compares a user-programmed set-point (VREF/2) with the output-voltage feedback and then signals the status to the PWM controller. Depending on the voltage difference, the controller will produce signals for either toggling the power switch or keeping it at the same state. The device also integrates frequency synchronization for periodic turning off of the power switch for efficiency and noise reduction.

In terms of protection, the UCC28C45DR offers a range of protection features including under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and over-voltage protection (OVP). With these features, the device protects against system malfunction in cases of low/high voltage input. Moreover, the device also integrates a thermal shutdown (TSD) feature which senses the rise in temperature and shuts down the controller in order to avoid damage.

The UCC28C45DR switch is suitable for applications such as laptop power supplies, modems, battery charger systems, and server power supplies. The device is able to achieve high-current efficiencies of up to 95% and yields low noise operation in the kHz range.
