The UCC2915DPTR is a single-channel hot swap controller designed to protect a wide range of high-density busses and systems from short circuit and overvoltage faults. It actively monitors the bus voltage and current and controls the system’s power rails to prevent overcurrent or overvoltage faults from occurring. The UCC2915DPTR features a comprehensive set of features that enable a broad range of application solutions.

Application Field

Hot swap controllers are ideal for applications that require the safe removal and insertion of components while the power is still on. This prevents damage to the system or the component being inserted and eliminates the need to disconnect and reconnect power during setup or maintenance. The UCC2915DPTR is suitable for a range of hot swap applications, including boards and cards in half- and full-height servers, servers, storage arrays, removable media, and more. It can also be used to protect battery management systems, FPGAs, ASICs, and other components that require robust overvoltage protection.

Working Principle

The UCC2915DPTR monitors the voltage, current, and temperature of the bus it is connected to and maintains a low impedance rail to avoid overcurrent faults from occurring. It can regulate the rail voltage within a safe window and limit maximum output current, allowing for optimized power management of connected circuits. Additionally, the UCC2915DPTR can detect excess power and overvoltage conditions, as well as control output power slew rate to ensure safe operation. All of these features ensure the system is protected from any unexpected or damaging faults.

The UCC2915DPTR features one or two integrated MOSFETs to provide power to the system. An integrated undervoltage lock-out (UVLO) circuit ensures the MOSFETs are not enabled until the voltage input reaches a predetermined level, preventing output faults caused by an incomplete or inadequate voltage source. The device also features an overtemperature protection (OTP) circuit to protect against over-temperature faults, as well as a thermistor input for monitoring and configuring the OTP circuit.
