UES1103 Working Principle

The UES1103 rectifier consists of two metal contacts (anode and cathode) separated by a PN junction. When a voltage is applied to the leads, and the anode is forward biased which causes the diode to become “on” and allows the current to flow in the forward direction, the diode is said to be in a “forward biased” state. On the other hand, when the cathode is forward biased and the PN junction is reverse biased, the diode is said to be in a “reverse biased” state and current flow is prevented in the reverse direction.

The forward biased state of the rectifier allows the current to flow through it with very little resistance. The voltage drop from anode to cathode is very low, typically between 0.7V and 1.2V, depending on the temperature and type of diode. The reverse biased state on the other hand, does not allow any current to flow in the opposite direction, and the voltage across the diode is about the same voltage that was applied to the leads.

When current is passing through a rectifier, heat and energy are lost due to the forward voltage drop. Large current passing through the rectifier can cause it to become hot. In order to prevent this, the rectifier should be connected to a heatsink.
