The ESD3.3ST5G is a transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode, which is designed to protect sensitive components from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other forms of overvoltage transients. The device has a breakdown voltage rating of 3.3V and can handle up to 5kW of transients.

The device is constructed of an active P-N junction that is reverse biased. When subjected to an electrical or mechanical shock, the electrical field across the junction increases, and if the field becomes high enough, an avalanche breakdown occurs. This causes the excess current to be quickly drained, thus providing protection to the device.

The TVS diode operates in several different scenarios, depending on the input voltage. When the input voltage is below the breakdown voltage, the diode does not conduct and thus does not provide any protection. When the input voltage is higher, however, the diode becomes highly conductive and can divert the excess current away from the device.
