Working Principle

A diode is a device that allows the current to flow in one direction only. It is an electronic component composed of heavily doped N-type and P-type semiconductor materials which form a “P-N junction”. In the normal (reverse-bias) state, this junction is completely reverse-biased and no current flows through it. However, when the forward voltage exceeds a certain limit, known as the “breakdown voltage”, the P-N junction turns into a low resistance path and the diode conducts current.

This process is called forward-biasing. It means that when a voltage is applied to the anode lead, the majority carriers in the N-type material (electrons) and majority carriers in P-type material (holes) come together and form a low-resistance current path. This current path allows current to flow from anode to cathode, thus conducting current.
